San Clemente California

San Clemente, California, in Orange county, is 8 miles SE of Laguna Niguel, California (center to center) and 26 miles SE of Santa Ana, California. The city is located in the Orange County metropolitan area. San Clemente has a population of 49,936.

Though long admired by explorers, the city of San Clemente remained inhabited only by the Juaneño Indians untill the late 18th century. In 1776, Father Junipero Serra established the Mission San Juan Capistrano and gradually brought both Indian and Spanish settlers to what is now known as San Clemente. In 1925, the former Mayor of Seattle, Ole Hanson, built a community here. He named the city San Clemente, literally meaning ‘The Spanish Village by the Sea’, after San Clemente Island. On February 27, 1928, the area was officially incorporated as a city.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.5 square miles (51 km2).

San Clemente enjoys a Mediterranean climate where temperatures tend to average around the 70’s. The warmest month of the year is August with an average temperature of 79 °F (26 °C). The coldest month is December with an average temperature of 64 °F (18 °C). The annual rainfall in 2010 was 10.5 inches (270 mm) and the annual days of sunshine was 310.

The city is served by Capistrano Unified School District. Within the city, there are six elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school.

San Clemente is served by two newspapers, The Sun Post News (owned by the Orange County Register) and The San Clemente Times.

The city of San Clemente offers excellent opportunities for hiking and biking along the beautifully meandering coastline and ridgeline. There are quite a few amusement parks that have fun rides and slides ideal for the children. Some parks are situated right on the beaches, and one can go to these parks for picnics with family and friends.
