Moreno Valley is a city located in Riverside County, California and is part of the San Bernardino-Riverside Metropolitan Area. Incorporated in 1984, Moreno Valley is a city of about 175,000 inhabitants (as of 2006). The city is closely tied to Riverside, California, the county seat and largest city in the county, which neighbors Moreno Valley directly to the west. Moreno Valley is also part of the Greater Los Angeles area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 51.5 square miles (133 km2). One of the most visible geographical features in Moreno Valley, visible from almost anywhere in the city, is Box Springs Mountain. This mountain at the northwest end of the city towers over the city, providing a concrete landmark. The face of the mountain that faces the city has a large “M” constructed upon it. This was built privately at the encouragement of the City Council, which argued it would foster unity.
Moreno Valley has a mild semi-arid climate, with Mediterranean characteristics with hot summers, and pleasant winters. Average daily temperatures in July and August are in the low nineties (degrees Fahrenheit). In the winter months, residents enjoy temperatures in the mid-sixties (degrees Fahrenheit). The city receives less than ten inches of rain a year.
Moreno Valley’s primary and secondary education needs are fulfilled by the Moreno Valley Unified School District and the Val Verde Unified School District. The city is also the location of one of the twenty-six Chapman University campuses.

Moreno Valley’s notable entertainment and leisure attractions include: The CrossWinds Community Theatre, The March Field Air Museum
The Inland Empire is home to many other attractions, including three major mountain resorts: Mountain High in Wrightwood, Big Bear, and Lake Arrowhead. Residents are also not far from all of the arts and entertainment offerings of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County to the west.
