Rialto California

Rialto is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 99,171 with the 2010 Census. Sixty miles to the west is the city of Los Angeles and 103 miles to the south is San Diego.

Rialto was incorporated as a city in 1911, but its roots trace back to well before the year 1500, which is when archaeologists believe the first Indian settlements took place. Much later, around the late 1800’s, the area began to be settled by families whose primary pursuits were agriculture and ranching, with vineyards and citrus groves abundant in the region. Rialto continued to grow steadily, culminated by a huge population spike occurring between 1950-1980, when the population increased more than ten-fold. It is not completely clear how Rialto got its name. One theory is that the name was formed by a contraction of the Spanish words Rio (river) and Alto (high). Another story is that the city was named after the Rialto Bridge (a landmark of Venice, Italy). Regardless, the bridge has been retained as a community symbol known as the “Bridge of Progress”.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.4 square miles (58 km2). 22.4 square miles (58 km2) of it is land and 0.06% is water.

Rialto also known as “Bridge City” features a somewhat cooler version of a Mediterranean climate which may be characterized as a Continental Mediterranean climate, which is known for wet, cool to chilly winters with hot, dry summers.

Rialto is served by the Rialto Unified School District. It has a Christian School called Bloomington Christian School for junior high and high school. It also has preschool thru 8th grade hosted by Calvary Chapel Rialto. Rialto is also home to a private Catholic school (preschool thru 8th grade). St. Catherine of Siena Parish School is located on Sycamore Avenue.
